APPLE WWDC SPECIAL: Leopard loose, Windows on Safari and iPhone apps

11 JUN 2007
Safari running on Windows? Say it ain't so!

Another Apple conference, another Steve Jobs keynote, but any hopes of a new product being launched were soon dashed when it became clear that the US online Apple Store had been taken down for a refurb rather than for any new goodies.

Instead Bill Gates' nemesis treated us to another look at OS X Leopard, showing off how iTunes CoverFlow feature is now integrated into Finder for browsing through documents – very slick – and how QuickView can give full page previews of files without having to open them.

The new desktop was also given a twirl. It finally loses its blue background and gets easy photo customisation and 'stacks' on the menu bar, which quickly expand to show all the documents open in an particular app (à la the tabs on the Windows Taskbar). We were also treated to a first look at some of the core animation that'll making the whole OS look that bit sweeter and shown how iChat can stream full-screen video to other chatters. All very, very nice.

Developers are getting their copies now, the rest of us will have to wait 'til October. Come on already!
