Canon launches HD-shooting EOS 500D DSLR

Canon has unveiled a brand new mid-range DSLR camera packing hi-def video capabilities. The EOS 500D's CMOS sensor is able to capture both 15.1-megapixel stills and 1080p HD video.

An HDMI output allows users to hook the camera directly to a TV for instant playback of photos and videos. Also on board is the same screen used on the EOS 5D Mark II, which offers a Live View mode usable both for stills and video shooting. There's 3.4fps continuous shooting and an ISO range that goes all the way up to 12,800.

In many ways the 500D can be seen as the little brother of the 5D Mark II, but with an APS-C sensor instead of a full frame sensor. Of course the price is a little more amateur-friendly too: when it goes on sale in May, the 500D will cost around £870 for the body only, or £1,400 in a kit with an EF-S 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens.
