Play.com selling SIM free iPhone 3Gs

Great news for non-O2 customers who want to experience the ace-ness of Apple’s multi touch interface, integrated GPS, iPod-like music and video

Great news for non-O2 customers who want to experience the ace-ness of Apple’s multi touch interface, integrated GPS, iPod-like music and video and, er, a substandard camera that can’t even capture video. The iPhone 3G is now available SIM free from Play.com!

“How so?” we hear you cry. Well, Play.com has stated that the iPhone is available “due to EU legislation ensuring the sale of SIM-free mobile phones”, and that you’ll get everything that you’d expect from an 02 model – barring all the proprietary goodies, like free WiFi from O2 hotspots.

Owners will also be encouraged to register with the Apple site as you would do normally, and are completely covered by Apple’s warranty – so all legit then, guv.

The celebrated web-seller is offering both the 8GB and 16GB versions of the iPhone 3G, priced at £549.99 and £599.99 respectively.

Not cheap. So if you do want to go contract-free on the iPhone 3G, you’re going to have to dig deep for it – it’s a far cry from the “free” iPhone deals due to hit O2 and The Carphone Warehouse in a matter of days.
