Rumour Mill – Motorola Xoom gets price and release date

Motorola's mysterious Xoom has apparently leaked its price tag and launch date. The careless little thing...

If your stomach’s rumbling for a 10.1in slice of Android Honeycomb, you could be in luck – a leaked Best Buy memo suggests Motorola’s Xoom tablet will be launching in the US as soon as February 17th for $700.

Unfortunately, there’s no news of a UK launch date yet, though Peterborough-based Handtec has previously listed a (gulp) £720 pre-order price tag.

That tallies with Motorola’s description of the Xoom at CES 2011 as a ‘premium’ tablet. By comparison, an iPad with 3G, Wi-Fi and the same storage (32GB) costs £612.

As you can see from our hands-on, we were very impressed with the Xoom’s dual-core speed and dual cameras – and that spec sheet certainly won’t come cheap. But with a grand iPad 2 unveiling strongly rumoured for early February, Moto might need to prune that Xoom price tag if it’s to remain an appetising alternative.
