Working takes up too much playing time, and doesn’t earn us enough money to buy all the things we want to play with. But would we be happy in a moneyless, leisure-oriented utopia? Perhaps not. It’s the monetary value of gadgets that brings us the joy of ownership. Like having Sky 3D when the Joneses have “only” Freeview HD. If everyone could simply requisition a £5k carbon-fibre mountain bike, would it ride quite as sweetly?
