App of the week – Google Voice

Platforms: Apple iPhone, Palm Pre, Palm Pixi
voice.google.com

If you wait until Apple approves the full Google Voice app, you might be accessing it on a fifth generation iPad S. Until then, Google has released a web app optimised for HTML5 handsets, allowing iPhone and Palm users (in America) to sidestep Cupertino’s app cops and make cheap calls right now.

Register your phone, log in and you can send SMS worldwide and make national calls for free, or international calls for pennies.

There are a few hiccups – the iPhone app didn’t download all my Google contacts from the cloud, and the Palm Pixi’s soft dialling pad is ridiculously slow.

But cool features like voicemails popping into your inbox as text (plus links to audio files) and a free dial-in number with free call forwarding, makes this one app that’s long overdue to reach the UK.

We do mention that it's for 'iPhone and Palm users (in America)' and that it's 'long overdue to reach the UK'. No UK date yet but hopefully we'll see it over here soon.
