$100 laptop gets touchscreen makeover

OLPC

I’ve always been a big fan of the OLPC (one laptop per child) $100 notebook. But not its pug–ugly, Shrek–like design. Which is why I’m really taken with this new version, the X0 2.0.

As the name suggests, it’s the second version of the cheap–as–chips PC, made specifically to get people in developing countries access to computers. The refresh though, is something else.

It comes with a fold–out dual touchscreen, designed so you can spy it in sunlight. There’s no regular keyboard, just one on screen as the pic shows. The designers reckon this means less chance of mechanical failure, so they’ll last far longer.

This particular model won’t roll out until 2010, but will only cost $75. We wait with baited breath, especially as the XP–toting version 1.0 has only just got off the ground.

Either way, it looks like a top gadget. What do you reckon? A great way for everyone to get involved in PCs, or just a pipe dream? Let us know in the comments section.

I think it's really nice. I wouldn't mind getting one myself if the spec was pretty good.
