First look: Sky's new HD EPG

As massive geeks we love nothing better than a good EPG, and none have impressed us more than the Sky Guide. But this autumn Sky HD owners will be treated to a shiny new menu system, and we've had a sneak preview.

The HD Sky Guide brings several changes, but three particularly stand out. Firstly, as you can see above, you now get a mini TV preview to show what's playing on your selected channel. Handy if you want to schedule your weeks TV while skim-watching Peep Show.

Finding your recorded programmes is a little easier too, thanks to the new 'series stacking' feature (see below). These are basically programme folders that stash all the episodes you've recorded, reducing the need for lengthy scrolling down pages of lists.

Finally, the search is now much improved. At the moment you can only search by three characters and three days ahead, but the new guide lets you enter the full name and search by genre and sub-genre (for example, 'action movies'). Best of all, you can also put a filter on the guide for hi-def content, and any programmes that are HD are highlighted in yellow.

It's not a revolutionary overhaul, but then the Sky Guide didn't really need one. Naturally, it won't be the only development for the Sky HD box this year – we're sworn to secrecy over the upcoming changes, but you'll be the first to know when Murdoch's henchmen give us the nod.

I work for Sky & this is looking very impressive, trust me!!!

adebond May 29, 2008 16:15

I'm a Virgin Media customer, and this is looking very old hat, trust me!!!

pattelpete May 29, 2008 16:23

how about SKY+, we all cannot afford HD!!! is there a revamp for SKY+???

laney_18 May 29, 2008 16:26

I can't stand the current Sky Guide as you can't keep the channel you are currently watching in the background so this looks like that much needed improvement to bring it up to the level that the one on my sony freeview box is at

This looks good.

The only thing this shares with the dreadful Virgin interface is the screen in the top right, i.e. the only useful thing VM does.

And despite losing the sheer amount of simultaneously viewable channels we gain instant program information.

And HD combined with the narrow typeface means we'll be able to see more of the program title per 1/2 hour segment. Nice :)

Will there be an update for the SKY+ box?

Mark Wilson May 29, 2008 17:15

There was no mention of an update for the Sky+ box but let me ask Sky and I'll get back to you asap...

@rick5years I loathe the expression 'trust me' it just makes it sound like I'm right, you're wrong. But then again, that pretty much would be Sky's opinion.

Anyway, I prefer to see the programme I'm currently watching even if I'm only browsing to see what's on later. Although, VM really need to do an EPG that goes further than 6am the next day.

Just had word from Sky – there are no plans for an update of the Sky+ box, as the new HD EPG is too advanced for it. Time to save up for Sky HD, then!

It's not so much the cost, it's the benefit. Yeah, HD is pricey, but for the sake of half a dozen or so non-premium channels it's even less tempting.

Are we to take this as a sign that development of Sky+ and its UI is pretty much at an end? Or just this particular update?

Looks good to me, my gripe on the EPG is not bing able to get info on future programmes whilst watching TV using the inscreen epg.

The pricing of HD is a choice. If you have the full Sky  package anyway, its a lot more worthwhile but its all down to affordability and priorities. I like HD and Sky anytime. I also get to fll alot of my TV watching time with HD content using Sky+. Sport, movies, US TV. There's plenty of content there. I also think the HD box gives a better picture than the old Sky+ SD one.

With Play TV hampered by DRM and delays to its 1080i recording, it's not been a great week for trusty

I'm currently using this new EPG and it's very quick and easy to get used to. In fact, going back to using the old version is a nightmare (as we found out when we were house sitting recently).

The search is good and allows you to set a recording directly from the search. Being able to see programme info for 12hrs in advance using the search & scan banner is a big improvement, as well as the back to channel button.

You can even pause live tv and hit tv guide to do what you want and as long as you use the back-up button continually to get back to the large tv screen you don't lose your live pause or the ability to rewind from your live pause.  There's other hidden gems - I'm sure those with Sky+HD will like it.

Have noticed new SKY+ HD box just released from Pace.

Regarding 'new' HD EPG will this be available as a firmware/software update (to ALL EXISTING HD boxes) or will it only run on new boxes when it is made publically available????

Just got it today, although the interface looks nicer, there are some things I just can't stand about it, for example the list now only supports 6 channels instead of a 11, also it feels slower. And this is what is REALLY ANNOYING ME! When I press guide on my remote, it takes about 8 seconds to load because my TV takes ages to change resolution, they have should of left the old menu system, but just made the old one a bit better, for example better search, and series link like this one. I think the whole update is way to drastic!
