New iPod Touch ready to rock?

The release of the iPhone 3G’s 2.1 firmware has already chucked us a rumour–flavoured bone, in the shape of cut and paste text for the hallowed blower.

And now it’s offering those of us with a proclivity for baseless gossip some more titbits. According to MacRumors, the new firmware refers to an iPod Touch known as 2.1. Seeing as the current models rock the number 1.1, it’s not too much a stretch of the imagination to see where this is heading.

MacRumors reckon this doesn’t just mean a bump to 64GB, but also the inclusion of GPS. If so, that’d make the Touch an even tastier proposition than it already is.

The Touch first reared its head in September last year, so there’s a good chance we cold see a new version dropping in the same month in 2008.

Copy and paste coming to the iPhone – at last!

Maybe I missing something, but I got the upgrade to allow the app store on my Ipod Touch and the version number is 2.0. Surely this makes v2.1 less special

The latest 2.0 download represents the new firmware update for the iPod Touch and iPhone, which provides, amongst other things, access to the App Store.

The 2.1 mentioned in the article above is likely to be a completely new hardware version of the iPod Touch.

Let the rumours regarding its new functionality commence.

I'm more than a little miffed with Apple's approach to the iPod Touch. I've got the basic 8GB model, and I love it to bits (it's the best gadget I've ever spent money on). But I have paid money twice for firmware upgrades in line with those available on the iPhone - first in January and then last month. iPhone-ers get them free.

This does seem to suggest new hardware, though. My little 8GB (whilst more than enough space for me at the minute) does make me feel jealous of the larger units.
