CD sounds its death rattle (at 44.1Hz, 16bit PCM)

CD has been quietly sitting in the corner, wondering whether it's time to call it a night, while the download generation has been taking over the party. Now it seems the Compact Disc is dialling for a cab, with even the hi-fi stalwarts going off to dance with its non-physical rivals.

Linn, one of the major forces in hi-fi and most famous for the LP12 turntable that's dominated the high-end market since the '70s, is pulling out of the CD player market.

No, this isn't one of those stories where a prudish hi-fi brand goes back to concentrate on even older technologies - Linn is turning its attentions to streaming devices such as its DS range. And the reason Linn's cited isn't that that's where the market is heading; it's because Linn claims that digital streaming is now superior to CD.

When you've got Spotify offering CD-quality streams and all that great downloadable content from iTunes and the like, it's getting increasingly difficult to argue a case for CD other than "But I like actual things!" And that's an argument that's better suited to vinyl, with its ritualistic process of placing the needle in the groove and changing to side B.

In the early '90s, who was brave enough to predict that vinyl might outlive CD?

i dunno...i'd still rather buy the CD than a digital download. you have it there safe in case your hard drive crashes and your iPod packs up. it's just that psychological thing of having something physical. and i like having all my CDs stacked up in my room, it's like decoration.

also did you know CDs are waterproof i tested it out by throwing one in my swimming pool. you know, global warming, floods, could be important. ;) yes i jest except it is true

Losing the cd is all very well and I am up for it, the kids scratch mine upon sight and my pet hate is finger prints.  Even making mix cds for the car, the cds seem to wear out after 2 laps of the m25.  Going digital is ok as long as everything is compatible with each other.  I had enough fun streaming with XP and the xbox 360! Vista is a lot easier now admittedly with the whole process.  I still run a mp3 player through a tape deck cos my car is too old to justify a snazzy new radio! I want something that I can put mp3s on and walk into a room and the hifi starts playing, I get into the car and it detects the device and starts playing.  No docks, no leads and it works wherever I am. Oh and it has iris recognition so it zaps my kids if they find it. ;p
