It’s official: the LG G5 will be revealed on 21 February

Yes, the very same day as Samsung's Galaxy S7

Last month, LG asked the world’s tech press to save the date for 21 February, but didn’t give a very clear indication of why – although given the timing of one day before Mobile World Congress 2016, we had a pretty good hunch.

And now, we know for sure: LG will indeed reveal its G5 smartphone at the event in Barcelona. Last year’s LG G4 launched a little later than its biggest Android competition, debuting in April, but by then the Samsung Galaxy S6 had already stolen the show – even so, LG produced a damn fine phone.

But now, LG will face off directly against Samsung, as both companies have events slated for 21 February. Samsung hasn’t officially affirmed that its event is for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, but following a wealth of leaks, we have no doubt that we’re in for a smartphone showdown for the ages in just less than three weeks. And LG has declared it “LG G5 Day,” no less.

What should we expect from the LG G5? While leaks haven’t been quite as plentiful as with the Galaxy S7, we’ve heard a few juicy tidbits. For example, it’s expected to have an all-metal build and may implement the dual-screen approach of the LG V10, but the biggest rumour suggests that the G5 will have a detachable bottom for sliding in new batteries and potentially attaching accessories. That would be a huge shift, if true.

LG has made consistently great flagship phones, but last year’s effort delivered iteration when the Galaxy S6 went big and bold. However, this year, with the Galaxy S7 seemingly sticking to the look and form of the previous entry, it could be high time for LG to steal the show. We’ll find out for sure in just a couple weeks, and bring you our impressions as soon as we get our hands on the G5.
