Samsung ATIV Q is some kind of bizarre/amazing do-it-all device
An insanely hi-res tablet-cum-laptop-cum-desktop with Windows 8, Android, S-Pen stylus and nine hours of battery life
Just what the heck is the Samsung ATIV Q? Well, it’s a bit of everything: a 13.3in laptop that can swiftly convert to a tablet or sort-of desktop and runs both Windows 8 and Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2.
Powered by Intel’s new Core i5 Haswell chip, the ATIV Q will purportedly deliver nine hours of on-the-go battery life, which is mighty impressive when you consider the screen boasts an incredibly high resolution of 3200 x 1800 pixels. This screen works with multi-touch, of course, but there’s also a Galaxy Note-style S-Pen smart stylus thrown in. There’s 128GB of SSD storage and 4GB of RAM, all squeezed into a package 13.9mm thick and 1.29kg in weight.
Dual bootylicious
The dual-booting aspect of the device is arguably its most interesting facet. It runs full-fat Windows 8 (not the pared-down Windows RT variety many tablets use), but if you like you can boot up an non-skinned version of Android 4.2.2 in order to run apps and the like. Data can be shared across the two operating systems, so you can pin Android apps to the Windows Start screen.
It’s a weird chimera of a device, but one we’re certainly looking forward to exploring in more depth. No price or release date info has been given at the time of writing.
