CES 2011 – 10 of the best Innovations

See who scooped the gongs at this year's Oscars of tech

Every January at CES, the biggest consumer tech show on the planet, awards are doled out to celebrate the year’s tech trailblazers and cool kit. To honour 2011’s winners and nominees, we’ve cherry picked, for your pleasure, the tech that has caught our roving gadget eye.

Sony Internet TV & Blu-ray player powered by Google TV

Where the web-meets-television, Google TV delivers a true online, app-driven, on-demand streaming experience from the comfort of your sofa. Sony will be the first launch Google TV-fuelled hardware in the UK with its four strong NSX-GTI HDTV series and NSX-GTI Blu-ray player expected to land early 2011.

Microsoft Kinect

Few could argue Microsoft’s hands-free motion sensor for the xBox 360 is the one of the most groundbreaking piece of tech we’ve seen in 2010 and as you can see its not just Stuff who has handed over an awards gong for its innovation. Its motion prowess is impressive but the newfound ability to hack and develop non-gaming apps has expanded its potential.

Sleek Audio SA7 Wireless Hybrid Earphones

Fashioned from military grade carbon fibre casing and featuring aluminium innards, these dual-drive buds sound suitably high-end. Not impressed? Well, you can even acoustically tune them to suit your music listening tastes and with KLEER tech onboard, wirelessly stream CD-quality music from a compatible device. What’s that? You want a pair?

Optoma Neo-i

This iPod/iPhone docking pico projector might just catch on with the masses. Designed to perch on the tabletop – although its still compact enough to lug around – you can beam your iPod-stored movies in a WVGA resolution and 16:9 format onto your Daz-white living room wall.

Estelon XA

We could send you to sleep by banging on about transducer design and multi layer internal resonance compounds but we would rather just sit back and gawp at these floorstander’s undulating curves. Estelon’s flagship airshifter is something to behold, it’s bodywork carved from a composite of marble. How very grand.

Samsung HT-C9950W 3D Blu-ray Home Theater System

The Korean manufacturer’s HT-C6930 3D Blu-ray 7.1 set up has already been pinned with a highly commended rosette at this year’s Stuff awards so it’s no surprise to see its newer, more expensive, ultra-cooler stablemate bowl over the judges at CES. It’s designed to compliment the C9000 TV, Stuff’s Gadg-extravagance of the year, no less.

Monster Vision MAX 3D glasses

Monster has solved the annoying incompatibility issue between different manufacturer’s 3D glasses and TVs with a pair of universal Active Shutter 3D specs. Designed to work across all 3D TV, its Active Sync RF transmitter decodes the shutter signal from the TV and beams it to the glasses for flicker-free stereoscopic action.

Kodak PlaySport Zx3

Flip-style camcorder mans up for extreme sportsman – or the butter-fingered. This tough ruggerdised cookie is built to withstand a barrage of physical abuse – it can survive being drowned in three metres of water – and still live to shoot 1080p HD video or snap some photos from its 5MP camera.
