For any of you that were looking forward to the release of the Xperia X2, we’ve got bad news – the handset will no longer be coming to the UK.
Vodafone was originally in line to offer the Sony Ericsson handset exclusively, but has since changed its mind following numerous delays in getting the handset to market.
The Xperia X2 was originally supposed to hit shelves at the end of October, but “extended testing” caused it to slip into 2010 with still no firm release date.
Vodafone confirmed its decision stating: “The delivery date of the device, with Windows 6.5, slipped pre-Christmas due to a series of technical issues, and we have taken the decision not to go ahead with the launch as it no longer fits with our planned portfolio.”
Sony Ericsson also confirmed we would not be seeing the handset on these shores, stating it was “disappointed not to make this phone available to consumers in the UK”.
This seems to be yet more evidence that Windows Mobile is losing favour, and with so many promising Android handsets due this year – including the X10 from Sony Ericsson itself – and Vodafone getting the iPhone from this Thursday, it appears the X2 just couldn’t compete.
