While HTC’s Magic hogged all the attention at Mobile World Congress 2009, the Touch Diamond2 was mostly left to sit despondently in a corner. But while it lacks Android, it’s a considerably sexier phone, as we found when one landed on our desk today.
Sure, it’s only Windows Mobile 6.1 rather than 6.5, but there are several neat improvements to its predecessor. The screen, already a quite lovely 2.8in VGA number, has been bumped up to 3.2in with 480×800 resolution.
There’s also a handy zoom bar below the screen – just stroke your finger up or down the line and it zooms into web pages accordingly. It’s a must considering the Touch Diamond2 lacks multi-touch, but works very smoothly.
Elsewhere the camera has gone from 3.2MP to 5MP with autofocus, and there’s now a much improved ‘Start’ screen which, rather than giving you a cramped list of options, now brings up a much more iPhone-like panel of programs (see below).
Drawbacks? The Touch Diamond2 ditches the 4GB internal memory (though there’s an SDHC slot to compensate), and it still has the same 528MHz Qualcomm processor. But it still looks like it could be the best phone in Windows Mobile town – we’ll have a full review very soon.
