Toshiba has gone pretty much all-out on the tech for its new flagship television. The REGZA SV, which will come in 46in and 55in varieties, sports an LED backlight, Resolution+ upscaling and 200Hz scanning.
??Well, the last part isn’t quite correct: while the TV doesn’t scan natively at 200Hz, it uses 100Hz tech, interacting with the LED backlight, to produce a smoothening effect on motion that Toshiba claims is ‘on a par’ with native 200Hz systems.??
The RGB LED backlight boosts the colour gamut and sports local dimming to increase the black levels in darker areas of the picture, much like the systems we’ve seen used in high-end Samsung, Sony and Philips LCD in the past year. Toshiba says it gives the SV a contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1.??
Resolution+ has been used in the previous generation of Toshiba LCDs, and essentially sharpens up standard definition content, especially around the edges of objects.??
Also on the SV series is DLNA networking tech for media streaming, four HDMI inputs, DivX playback via USB and a new “Deep Lagoon” design that sees the screen sitting flush with the TV frame – this apparently boosts contrast, much like the slight glossy surfaces of current Samsung TVs.??
Look out for the REGZA SV series models in shops next month – pricing is yet to be confirmed.
