It looks as if ex-HD DVD supporter Onkyo has given itself fully over to the Blu side. It’s just launched the DV-BD606 Blu-ray player, which supplies the usual mix of retina-stroking 1080p Deep Color visuals and ear-pleasingly lovely lossless DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD sound.

That 1080p video can be delivered at a movie-like 24 frames per second if your HDTV or projector supports it, while the audio data is squirted out as a pure data bitstream – so in other words you’ll also need an AV receiver with an HDMI input if you want to get the best sound quality.

It’ll also upscale your standard DVDs to hi-def resolutions, and will play DivX, MP3 and JPEG files from a CD-R or DVD-R.

The player supports Blu-ray Profile 1.1, which means you can use the BonusView picture-in-picture options with any discs that offer it, but Onkyo hasn’t managed to squeeze in Profile 2.0 and BD-Live capabilities.

Given the £399 price point that’s a bit of a shame, but if you can live without BD-Live’s web-connected japery (and from what we’ve seen of it so far, you probably can) this looks like a pretty decent prospect. It’s available now in silver or black.
