Take a look at most phone forums and you’ll find a common dilemma – splash out on Sony Ericsson’s 5megapixel C902, or wait for the 8megapixel C905 this winter? Well, we’ve just taken delivery of a prototype of the latter, so it’s time for an early lens-to-lens face off.
The C905 has two big camera advantages over the C902: it has an 8MP sensor to let you blow up photos to poster size and, crucially, sports a Xenon flash (the C902 only has an LED number).
But as you can see from the comparison shot below, this all comes at a cost – it’s twice as thick as its sleeker, candybar cousin. If phone looks are important to you, there really is only one choice.
On the other hand, the C905 really could easily sneak into a compact camera party when viewed from behind, and its extra girth makes it a little more comfortable to hold when taking snaps. Plus, it’s a much more powerful all-rounder – it packs HSDPA, Wi-Fi and AGPS, which you can use with either Google Maps or pre-loaded Wayfinder software (we sadly couldn’t test this on our prototype).
Other differences? The M2 memory card slot is on the side rather than under the battery cover, and its menu system is more refined and less cartoony than the standard Sony Ericssons UI found on the C902 (see below).
