Disney smartwatch is able to tell exactly what object you’re touching
We know what you’re thinking, but no, it’s not made out of Disney magic
If you’re touching something blindfolded, you probably wouldn’t be able to tell what it is. But if you’re wearing this smartwatch, it might be able to step up and give you the info.
This wizardry is brought to you by the clever folks at Carnegie Mellon University and Disney Research Center, but disappointingly isn’t made from pure Disney magic. It’s rather more scientific than that.
How does it work, then? Well, each object produces a signature electromagnetic (EM) signal. When you touch an object, this signal will run through your body when. The concept smartwatch is able to identify what kind of object you’re gripping or prodding by recognising its distinct pattern via a system called EM-Sense.
All very impressive, but what does it mean for the future of smartwatches? It could mean that they finally leave behind their reputation of being glorified notification centres, and transform into something truly useful.
If you grasp your steering wheel, your EM-sensitive smartwatch could pull up directions to your next destination; if you touch your barren fridge, it could automatically order up frozen pizza and beer so you’ll never go hungry again. See now why we need this to make it into the mainstream?
