New Call of Duty teased via Snapchat codes in Black Ops II
Updated game has mysterious codes that lead to an odd teaser clip from the app
If the last decade is any indication, a new Call of Duty game will be released later this year, and Activision always makes a huge deal of each announcement. But this year’s reveal might come via a more subtle social media campaign.
Call of Duty: Black Ops II (pictured), released in 2012, was curiously updated recently – which is odd for a game of that age with two big franchise successors launched in its wake – and players still plugging away at the first-person shooter found some curious new markings on multiplayer maps.
They’re Snapchat QR codes, of course, and scanning one with the messaging app sends you to the Call of Duty account on the service. Friend the account and you’ll get an odd little video that doesn’t seem to show much at this point, but probably points to the to-be-announced next game.
Given the game in question and the fact that the franchise’s studios are on three-year development cycles now, we’d say it’s very likely that the new game is Call of Duty: Black Ops III. The last two games – 2013’s Ghosts and last year’s Advanced Warfare – were both new brands for the series, but Black Ops has been incredibly successful, and its maker (Treyarch) is up next in the three-team rotation.
The last two games were both announced at the start of May, beginning a barrage of trailers and demos that exploded around the E3 expo in June and culminated in the eventual holiday releases. Don’t be surprised if the same happens here, but Activision may continue to trickle out little teases and details in advance of a proper reveal.
