OnePlus confirms new X phone, with reveal event on 29 October

Please no VR stream, please no VR stream...

Earlier this week, a leak out of the United States Federal Communications Commission showed an unfamiliar new OnePlus handset (seen below), following teases from OnePlus over the summer about another phone coming in 2015.

And now we know when to expect it. Today, OnePlus announced that it is working on a new device called the OnePlus X – and it’ll be revealed at an event on 29 October. The original Chinese post doesn’t translate well at all into English, but the English-version Twitter feed has posted a similar teaser image with the hashtag, “#PowerfullyBeautiful.”

It’s not the only new thing we’ve heard today, either. Android Community captured a purported screenshot of a since-pulled listing for a “OnePlus Mini” on Amazon India. The listing claims that the 32GB device will feature a 5in LCD IPS display running at 1080p, run a MediaTek MT6795 processor, and come with 2GB RAM and a 2,450mAh battery pack.

The new phone also reportedly runs OxygenOS 3.0 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. But there’s another interesting tidbit in the mix: a mention of ClearForce technology, which is similar to Apple’s 3D Touch on the iPhone 6s, letting users perform additional gestures that tap into pressure sensitivity. The device also claims “Side Touch” functionality, although it’s not clear exactly what that entails.

Assuming the OnePlus Mini in this listing is just the OnePlus X by another name, then it sounds like a pretty big shift away from the OnePlus 2. It’s a smaller, less-powerful phone, but ClearForce tech is a big enhancement – so perhaps this will be a testbed for the OnePlus 3 in that respect, at least.

We should get all the details on 29 October – hopefully not exclusively in VR again – and if the OnePlus 2 rollout is any indication, the company may well tease out a lot of little details before then. Stay tuned for more as it comes.
