Sony’s 4K-gaming PlayStation 4.5 will be revealed by October
Just in time for the PlayStation VR launch, claims a report
Recently, a report from Kotaku claimed that Sony was deep into development of an upgraded PlayStation 4, which would offer 4K gaming and enhanced graphics, and now another report has affirmed those claims.
Today, the Wall Street Journal issued its own report on the matter, claiming that its sources have similarly confirmed development of the enhanced console, which Kotaku said developers are calling the PlayStation 4.5 or PlayStation 4K.
This report adds a bit more information to the story, affirming that the regular and upgraded PlayStation 4 consoles are likely to offer the exact same game library, albeit with the possibility of enhanced graphics, resolution, and performance on the higher-end hardware. If true, it’ll avoid the kind of division seen with some games released only for the enhanced New Nintendo 3DS and not the original one.
The Wall Street Journal says that Sony will announce the console before October’s release of the PlayStation VR, as the PlayStation 4.5 is also slated to provide more processing power for the virtual reality headset. The enhanced GPU would allow for smoother VR performance, along with more detail for both VR and standard TV games.
"Sony’s goal with the upgraded PlayStation 4 console is to capture gamers willing to pay for a richer gaming environment, including a high-end virtual reality experience," reads the report, confirming that a two-tier approach is likely with the current PlayStation 4 still sold as a lower price than the new version.
The Journal’s report doesn’t suggest a release date for the console, although later this year makes a lot of sense: that way, Sony can sell the PlayStation VR’s expanded capabilities right from the start, and be ready to fend off Nintendo’s latest effort with the coming NX console.
