Xiaomi’s Redmi 5 is a full-screen phone for the budget-conscious

Xiaomi has announced the latest additions to its Redmi range, the Redmi 5 and 5 Plus. Both phones boast an oh so 2017 18:9, pretty much bezel-free display, with rounded corners and an aluminium unibody. The lower end Redmi 5 runs on a Snapdragon 450 processor, while the 5 Plus gets a Snapdragon 625 and a Full-HD+ screen. It’s a single camera setup on both handsets, which you’d expect for the price (we’ll get to that in a second), but power users and YouTube addicts alike will be delighted with the Plus’ whopping 4000mAh battery. The entry level Redmi 5 starts at 799 yuan (around £90), while a 3GB/32GB 5 Plus will cost you 999 yuan (around £112). It goes without saying that both are very much in the affordable bracket, but right now there are no plans to launch outside China. Here’s hoping.
