Update: Omnifone, which makes the tech behind PlayNow Plus, has just told us that this will be available on 6, 12 and 18 month contracts. You can keep 300 tracks at the end of an 18 month deal and there’ll be 1,000 tunes already embedded on the phone.
Sony Ericsson is readying itself for a mobile music ding-dong with Nokia Comes With Music with the launch of their own subscription tunes service, PlayNow Plus.
Like Nokia Comes With Music, you’ll front up for a phone and get tracks for free. At the moment, they’re prepping a limited–edition W902 Wlakman phone packing the software.
You’ll be able to grab tracks as and when you like and stash them on the blower’s 8GB memory. Once your deal’s up, you can keep the tracks you play the most and shove them on any MP3 player you fancy.
Unlike Nokia Comes With Music, all the major labels are on board, as well as the best indies, so you won’t need to just subject yourself to the AOR nonsense that passes for music these days (Kings of Leon, we’re looking at you).
The service is due to hit Sweden first and will hit the UK sometime before Christmas. SE is being coy about the price, but expect it to clock in somewhere around the £100 mark. We’ll bring you more as we get it.
