Jeep drags its Iconic off-roader out of the dark ages with its first hybrid engine
Jeep Wranglers have been able to conquer mountains, ford rivers and pretty much tackle the elements for years, but the 2019 JL model will be the first to do it without belching fumes. OK, it’s hardly going to out-Prius a Prius, but its mild hybrid system will keep the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged engine in check with petrol-free coasting when you’re not stamping on the accelerator pedal. And what self-respecting off-road warrior would be caught without stop-start ignition? Don’t think this is a bargain basement off-roader behind the removable door panels, either. Inside you get plenty of mod cons, including a digital instrument cluster and 8in infotainment screen. Not bad for something that’ll wade through 760mm-deep water, ascend 44-degree inclines and tackle the rockiest of rocky terrain with a 277mm ground clearance. No word on prices just yet, but expect the order book to open early next year.
