HTC could reveal a smartwatch at MWC 2015
Looks like the Taiwanese tech giant is RSVPing to the smartwatch party
We’re already looking forward to HTC revealing the shiny new One (M9) on stage at MWC in March, but gadget fans could be in for another treat from the company too.
According to Bloomberg and Pocket-lint’s sources, HTC will unveil its first ever smartwatch at its event in Barcelona, joining the ranks of the Moto 360, LG G Watch R, Sony Smartwatch 3 and Samsung Gear 2.
The mysterious smartwatch is expected to be revealed in collaboration with sports brand Under Armour, following the announcement of a partnership between the two companies earlier this month.
Under Armour’s existing UA Record app lets fitness fans track their stats, complete challenges and keep tabs on their friends, and its open-source nature means it’s compatible with an array of fitness trackers including those from Jawbone, Withings and Garmin. It’s not too much of a stretch then, to expect HTC’s timepiece to join the list of compatible devices.
Sources have yet to confirm whether or not the HTC smartwatch will be running Google’s Android Wear OS or opting for its own software, Samsung-style, but we expect to see the usual step-counting skills on offer.
Currently the only Android Wear smartwatch to offer GPS for phone-free tracking is the Sony smartwatch 3. If HTC’s offering can squeeze in both a GPS module and a heart-rate tracker, then it’ll certainly stick out from the rest of its rivals.
