Apple iPhone 5S and Samsung Galaxy S4 to come with wireless charging?

It looks like both Apple and Samsung are set to banish charging cables with their upcoming flagship smartphones

It’s time to cut the cord – reports suggest that both the iPhone 5S and Galaxy S4 could feature wireless charging.

Get your salt grinder out and prep for pinching, though – DigiTimes quotes unnamed “industry sources” as claiming that the Galaxy S4 will feature Qi wireless charging, while Apple is set to develop its own proprietory wireless charging tech. Of course it is, it’s Apple. With LG, Nokia and HTC already embracing wireless charging it seems reasonable to assume the next Samsung and Apple flagship smartphones will do the same.

It’s reported that the iPhone 5S will feature Apple’s wireless charging solution out of the box. Samsung, however, is set to take the same approach with the Galaxy S4 as with its S3 predecessor, with a removable back cover adding wireless charging smarts. That also suggests that a plastic build is more likely for the S4, rather than the metal frame we’re hoping for – but it does open the door for third-party wireless charging options.

Check back on March 14th for the official Samsung Galaxy S4 launch to find out more.
