Apple will release a cheaper 8GB iPhone 5c on 18 March
The iPhone 5c will be a little easier on your wallet, but you'll pay for it with smaller storage
Apple will release an 8GB version of the iPhone 5c on 18 March with a reduced price tag, according to the latest online whispers.
Leaked documents from O2 Germany showing off an 8GB iPhone 5c for €60 less than the price of the current 16GB model appear to be genuine. Tech Radar confirmed with a UK-based O2 branch that the 8GB iPhone 5c models will be going on sale tomorrow.
While a UK price has yet to be confirmed, it’s expected to be around £50 less than the existing 16GB iPhone 5c model, which retails at £470.
While £420 is cheap when compared to its iPhone 5s brother, that 8GB of storage is going to get eaten up pretty quickly. And with no microSD slot, it won’t be long before you’ll run into problems adding new music, photos and apps.
And compared to the likes of the 8GB Moto G which offers Android 4.4 KitKat, quad-core power and a 4.5in 720p screen for £130, the 8GB iPhone 5c is still no where near wallet-friendly enough.
Apple hasn’t shared detailed sales figures for the iPhone 5c, but it definitely hasn’t reached the popularity of the iPhone 5s.
The 5c has been criticised for being too expensive given its older hardware, and despite Apple not labelling it as a budget option, that’s the perception it appears to have carved into the minds of consumers, who are unlikely to find the newer price low enough.
