Chinese company Vivo promises 3.85mm-thick phone
Think the Oppo R5 is too fat? There could be an even thinner smartphone on the way
With the launch of the 4.85mm Oppo R5, you could have been forgiven for thinking the smartphone thinness wars ended. Thank God, you thought: now we can all go home, have a nice cuppa and wait for phone makers to start improving battery life, which is what we all really care about.
But no. Sorry, but there’s more. Or less, depending on how you look at it. Because Chinese manufacturer Vivo is boasting that has a 3.85mm-thick smartphone in the works.

Making the iPhone 5s look chubby
Taking to Weibo (China’s answer to Twitter), the company posted images of a mysterious device next to the 7.6mm-thick iPhone 5s. Or rather two of them, because even when stacked, a pair of them fits into that very same 7.6mm thickness.
Vivo is hardly a household name outside of its native country, so we wouldn’t bank on this wafer-thin device turning up on UK retailers. And there’s no word on its specifications or even its name, so it’s probably some way off going on sale anywhere.
That said, the company was the first in the world to deliver a phone with a 2K 2560 x 1440 screen, so there’s every chance that it’ll end up in first place in the thinness race. For whatever that’s worth – even the larger Oppo R5 is so skinny it doesn’t have space for a 3.5mm headphone socket.
