If Sony’s handheld PSP offers PS2-quality gaming plus movie playback and music, why would anyone bother buying a home console? Because there’s no way to link the PSP to your television, that’s why.
Fortunately for us, a bunch of opportunist peripheral manufacturers have stepped in to plug the gap, allowing you to play PSP games – or even watch UMD movies – on a TV. But as the PSP has no video output, how do they do it? By USB?
If only. As Gizmodo is reporting, there are three separate products announced. Blaze’s PSP to TV projector, and the more awkward looking PSPonTV sit on top of the PSP’s screen and capture the video output with a camera. This doesn’t bode well for top-notch video – the output is likely to be more akin to watching a pirate video recorded from the back row of a cinema rather than crisp DVD.
The alternative is the PSP2TV; from Farmer Entertainment. This is a more advanced option that uses a docking station – but it involves replacing the faceplate on your PlayStation, thus invalidating the guarantee. IGN has a great review of the product here.
So, none of these products take an easy route to achieve the PSP’s most-wanted feature. Which perhaps suggests there isn’t an easy route. That’s understandable – after all, it’s going to be six to twelve months before we’ll be able to get our hands on a PS3, and Sony needs to protect PS2 sales in the meantime.
We’ll stick with the little screen for now…
