When was the last time we were drooling over a webcam? June 2003 and the launch of Apple’s iSight. Since then, not a drip. But now we can feel the saliva building once more. Sony’s just pulled the wraps off its latest PlayStation Eye – and it’s a stunner.PS2 fans will note the dropping of the word ‘Toy’ from its previous EyeToy billing, and for good reason. The PS3 version has quadrupled the resolution, doubled the frame rate and increased light sensitivity by 100 per cent from its predecessor. It’ll now record 640×480 VGA video at an eye-popping 60fps, or quarter resolution 320×240 footage at 120fps. A dual lens offers a whole body wide-angle or zoomed-in face shot while four microphones filter out echo and background noise. It’s good to go for voice and video chat. No news yet on any Eye specific games, but the launch date does tie in nicely with the release of Stuff favourite, SingStar. We’re plugging in the mics and readying our Morrissey impressions as we speak…
