Desiring a sleek mid-ranger? The HTC Desire 830 could be the object of yours

HTC offers another Desire, just months after the 825 debuted

It’s easy to lose track of where HTC is at with its Desire line of mid-range phones. There was the Desire 820 in 2014 and last year’s Desire 826, but then also the Desire 825, 630, and 530 shown at MWC in February.

Well, whatever the case, HTC is already pushing ahead with a new one: 9to5Google reports that the Desire 830 has broken cover and will release this week in Taiwan. It’s not yet clear when the phone might show up elsewhere, but there’s reason to be intrigued.

It’s been a year and a half since the HTC Desire 820, which we assume the Desire 830 is succeeding in the lineup, and the upgrades are significant: you’ll find a 1080p panel for the 5.5in screen (instead of 720p), and the octa-core 1.5GHz MediaTek Helio X10 processor is joined by 3GB RAM this time around. The Desire 830 offers 32GB internal storage with support for microSD cards, too.

Also, the Desire 830 is HTC’s first mid-ranger to bundle in optical image stabilisation on the 13-megapixel back camera, while the front sticks with a 4MP UltraPixel shooter. The 2,800mAh battery isn’t massive, but then again, the HTC 10 impressed on battery life with its 3,000mAh pack – so we’re optimistic, at least.

Based on the image above, the Desire 830 looks smooth, sleek, and curvy, with white plastic and a colourful bumper, plus it has two front-facing BoomSound speakers – something the HTC 10 left behind with its brand new form. And luckily, it’s running Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box.

It’s slated to release in Taiwan this Friday, 6 May for NT $9,990 (about £210), and the price could be right if you want something new and capable that isn’t quite a flagship. We liked the look of the Desire 825 but were underwhelmed by the specs, so maybe this will be a better pick should it release internationally.

In another HTC note, oft-reliable leaker Evan Blass suggests that the company will finally reveal a smartwatch the week of 6 June – but given how many times we’ve heard this one before, we’re not marking our calendars with permanent ink just yet. One to leave in the back of your mind, however.
