Detroit: Become Human for PlayStation 4 explores androids with emotions
It's the first PS4 game from Heavy Rain developer Quantic Dream
Quantic Dream and director David Cage make some of the most divisive big-budget games today. Games like Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls have been alternately loved and reviled for the very same things: emotional storytelling and sometimes mundane play mechanics.
Maybe Detroit: Become Human will finally bring a proper consensus on the studio’s work. Just revealed at Sony’s Paris Games Week presentation – along with Gran Turismo Sport, Tekken 7, and Robinson: The Journey – the game is Quantic Dream’s first for PlayStation 4, and it’s set in the future in the titular American city.
Detroit imagines a time ahead when lifelike androids roam the city, employed for their ability to do manual labour but seemingly hated by some for taking away jobs – and/or not being fully human. The trailer below sets up the premise of one of those androids (Kara) apparently “becoming human,” as the subtitle suggests, or at least doing her best to pass amongst the fleshy folks.
"We imagined our world in a near future where androids like Kara would look, speak and move like real human beings," writes Cage in a PlayStation.Blog post. "We wondered how we – humans – would react if we were confronted with a new form of intelligence, how androids conceived as machines would be perceived if they started to have emotions."
If it looks familiar, it should: Quantic Dream explored the concept in an impressive PlayStation 3 tech demo back in 2012, and it sounds like the idea of digging into this world was too exciting for them to ignore. There’s no word yet on a release date, but given that no proper gameplay has been shown, we wouldn’t be surprised if it’s still a ways off. Looks like a very compelling starting point, however.
