What types of things will be launched at IFA?
There are stacks of new products launched at IFA including TVs, home cinema gear, hi-fi, smart home kit and even laptops, tablets and smartphones though these tend to be thinner on the ground than a few years ago. In short, we can expect a heck of a lot of fresh gear to drop and when it does, we’ll include our stories about it on this page.
The very biggest brands like Samsung and Sony have tended not to launch so much at the show in recent years, preferring to use their own events and live streams to launch products. IFA was the event where Samsung used to launch its Galaxy Note line up, but in recent years has used it more for home appliances. Indeed, IFA has a whole lot of home appliance announcements – there are halls and halls of that stuff, which we’ll only cover if it’s really exciting.
Leo Gebbie, Principal Analyst for Connected Devices at CCS Insight says that he’s expecting there to be a big focus on TV and audio because of the upcoming men’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar this November. “The timing of a winter tournament so near to the holiday season should help to boost interest here, he says”.
Gebbie also talked about other themes we’re expecting to hear more about: “Foldable displays and flexible display technology could be a theme that wraps around the whole show. Samsung, Oppo and Huawei have taken the lead in terms of launching commercial foldable phones but other Chinese players have made no secret of their ambitions to compete here. Asus will also be showing off its Zenbook 17 Fold OLED laptop which could be an early disruptor in this segment.”
“Smart home can often bubble away as a topic, and market leader Ring will be present alongside other providers such as Arlo, Philips Hue, Tado and Yale. There could be rich overlap here with domestic appliances… with new smart connected features.”
“We aren’t expecting much in the way of major VR or AR announcements, but it would be no surprise to see some headsets on the show floor, especially if they choose to leverage football frenzy by showcasing immersive sports experiences.”
When will IFA 2022 get underway?
While the show officially opens its door on 2 September, many exhibitors are already unveiling their new wares. We’ve got boots on the ground in Berlin to cover all the biggest launches and we’re updating this feature as things progress.
Unlike many shows we attend, IFA is actually open to the public so you can get tickets to go and see the latest tech for yourself. Almost a quarter of a million people usually attend and the event space is massive with over 30 halls covering a space of 285,000m2 – it is huge.
