The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD announced for Wii U
Nintendo's latest presentation delivers a wealth of release dates and details
We’re in the midst of a pretty dire holiday season for the Wii U as Nintendo’s next console project looms off in the distance, but the company held a Nintendo Direct streaming event today to pump a little more hope into fans.
Leading the charge is the announcement of the long-rumoured The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD. Like The Wind Waker HD before it, this upgraded version of the original Wii and GameCube action role-playing favourite will be upgraded with sharper graphics, as well as unspecified new play elements.
And as has become customary for all major Wii U releases, it will ship with a Wolf Link Amiibo, which has Midna riding on its back. Better yet, some data can be transferred from Twilight Princess HD into the brand new Legend of Zelda coming to Wii U next year, so that’s a sweet perk. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD will hit Wii U on 4 March 2016, and a bundle including the Amiibo figurine and game soundtrack will also be available.
As for next year’s original Zelda? It’s still coming to Wii U. Nintendo reiterated the news to silence speculation that it would be pushed onto the next console, codenamed the NX, although it wouldn’t be surprising to see a dual release on both platforms – identical to what the company did with Twilight Princess back in 2006. You can catch a small glimpse at the game at the end of the trailer above.
Nintendo also announced that the Wii U version of Pokken Tournament, the Pokemon-meets-Tekken fighter currently in arcades, will release in the spring. Developed by The Pokemon Company and Namco Bandai, the game will include a limited edition Shadow Mewtwo Amiibo card with first-run copies.
Lastly, if you’re anxious for Star Fox Zero, which was sadly pushed out of the holiday season, Nintendo now says it will release in Europe in April (and 22 April specifically in North America). So at least the spring looks pretty good for interesting Wii U games, although we hope there’s more than just that big trio on tap.
As for a couple current games, Splatoon will receive new gear and a fresh online stage in the next two days, while Super Mario Maker will launch a web portal for searching for and queueing up courses in December. It doesn’t quite make up for the thin Wii U holiday release slate, but at least it’ll keep those games feeling fresh for a while longer.
