We’re dusting off our Ericsson R310, Siemens M65 and Nokia 5140 as news reaches us that the waterproof mobile is again making waves. Previously confined to Japan, Casio’s G’zOne TYPE-R, has been picked up by LG in South Korea and dubbed the canU 502S.

Strutting about in suitably garish colours for those crazy Pepsi-Max types, it’s a big tough clamshell with some modern-convenience goodies such as a 1.3 megapixel camera for capturing your wacky exploits. An MP3 player’s also on board to pump out the rocking soundtrack needed to power you along your next dirt trail.

For us more sedate sub-humans, it should survive being submersed in a pint of mild for up to 30 minutes, though we don’t recommend testing the claim. A plunge from a pub table should be no problem either, thanks to a polyurethane and glass construction.

Other nifty touches include an optional ‘bumper’ – the black plastic bit on the green version – for added protection, and a digital compass that fills the G-Shock-style exterior display.

The only bad news is that it’s still CDMA-only, so expect it to reach the States before Casio gets its act together and builds a Europe-friendly GSM version. Start the petition now.
