LG G4 will have a light-guzzling 16MP F1.8 camera and an 8MP selfie snapper

LG has has already revealed that its upcoming G4 flagship will have an improved 5.5in QHD display, and now it’s spilled the tasty beans regarding the handset’s imaging prowess.

The G4 will pack in a 16MP sensor – up from the G3’s 13MP offering – along with the world’s “widest aperture camera developed for a smartphone”.

Its f/1.8 aperture means that the G4’s camera will be able to take in 80 percent more light that its G3 predecessor which, given how good the G3’s camera is, makes us rather excited.

There are a number of benefits to this wider aperture, the main one being increased detail picked up in low-light conditions, thanks to the extra light that’s received by the camera module.

The wider aperture also means a faster shutter speed, which helps reduce blur, as there’s less time for your hand movements to have an affect on the final shot. Coupled with the expected Optical Image Stabilisation, we’ve got high hopes for the G4’s low-light capabilities.

While we don’t expect DSLR-like depth of field performance when it comes to portrait shots (where a subject is in focus and the background is nicely blurred), we could see this blurring effect in macro shots of closer objects.

The front-facing camera module of the G4 will feature an 8MP camera for super-charged selfies. It will also have an “ultra-thin IR filter” which measures in at 0.11mm – half the thickness of competing IR filters, apparently – which is meant to prevent infrared light from interfering with your duck face (or other) poses.

The G4’s insides remain a mystery, though a Snapdragon 808 processor has been rumoured.

LG’s invite to the 28 April G4 launch also suggests a leather back, but we’ll have to wait until then to give you all the full details. Unless LG stays in its sharing mood, of course.
