Mercedes-Maybach’s opulent open-top has Swarovski headlights
But, with a V12 behind them, you're more likely to see the back of it
What’s all this about diamonds, then?
Put down that crowbar, sneaky Pete – Mercedes hasn’t quite gone full-on bling for its latest cabrio collab. The Maybach S650 doesn’t have actual diamonds on board, but it does have headlamps encrusted with Swarovski crystals.
It’s the most OTT open-top in the Mercedes line-up, with swoopy bodywork, unique 20in alloys and Maybach badges on every surface.
So it’s all about posing, not performance?
Oh, there’s still a serious lump of metal under that stretched hood – the same 6.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V12 petrol engine you’ll find in the AMG S65 saloon.
It’s chucking out 621bhp, which is enough to propel you to 62mph in a little over 4 seconds. Not bad for something that weighs almost as much as an elephant.
It’ll still turn heads when I’m not in a rush, though?
Aside from the sparkly headlights, you mean? Yup, Merc-Maybach’s got you covered. Throw open the doors and tiny Maybach logos get projected onto the ground.
Inside, the whole thing is trimmed with leather and nut brown magnolia. It’s got every option you’d find on an S-Class cabriolet fitted as standard, too – so your neck will stay toasty with the Airscarf heaters when you’ve got the top down in the winter.
Oh, and exclusive lettering on the cup holder saying which number out of 300 you’re currently driving round in.
Wait, 1 of 300? Just how “limited edition” are we talking here?
Very limited. As in “you’re already too late” limited. There’s only going to be limited run production of 300 cars, and they’re going to cost an eye-watering amount of cash.
The existing Mercedes-AMG S65 Cabriolet would already set you back £193,900, and this diamond geezer will command even more moolah when it arrives mid-way through 2017.
Still, each one does come with its own individually numbered key ring and certificate signed by Mercedes-Benz chairman Dieter Zetsche – which is nice, I suppose.
