Michael Fassbender to star in Assassin’s Creed film
Yup, Magneto himself is set to star in the adaptation of this gaming great
Assassin’s Creed looks set to be the latest video game to make the jump from consoles to the big screen – with Prometheus and X-Men: First Class star Michael Fassbender donning the assassin’s hood.
Previous video game adaptations haven’t exactly set the silver screen alight – we’re looking at you, Super Mario Bros – but getting the star of Shame and Inglourious Basterds on board can only be a good thing. Plus the Assassin’s Creed film will be co-produced by Ubisoft and Fassbender – which means that the games company won’t permit the sort of tinkering with the property that did for the likes of Doom.
Could this be the tipping point where video game films grow up? Naughty Dog proved, with Uncharted 3, that games can produce movie-level scripts that immerse the players more than films ever can. Hopefully that means Hollywood can finally deliver an adult big-screen video game adaptation.
So after you’ve played Assassin’s Creed 3 until the disc wears away – in around 2014 – your wait may finally be over for the film version. Mind you, don’t go booking your place at the cinema just yet – the last time a games studio tried to create a film and present it to Hollywood as a fait accompli was Microsoft’s ill-fated Halo project.
