Microsoft reveals 29th July Windows 10 release date
It’s official: the next edition of the world’s most popular OS is coming soon
Windows 10 will be with us in less than two months. Microsoft today announced the official release date of the next edition of its OS: 29th July.
On that day, Windows 10 will be available as a free upgrade to all owners of Windows 7 or 8.1 (an offer which will be available for one year from that day). Upgrades can be reserved in advance “in the coming weeks”.
Windows 10 is a simultaneous release across Windows computers, tablets and smartphones. Microsoft says that, once a device is upgraded to Windows 10, it will keep it current for “the supported lifetime of the device” at no extra cost.
While Windows 10 has been available in various pre-release builds over the past few months, these are full of bugs and non-final features. Microsoft now has just two months to iron all that out and deliver a finished, polished product – something that, as anyone who remembers the Windows Vista launch will tell you, isn’t a given even for a company of Microsoft’s size and resources.
Even so, the coming of a new iteration of the world’s most popular and best-known PC operating system is sure to generate a lot of excitement. Get in the mood by checking out our preview of Windows 10, and our piece on the pre-release version’s best and worst traits.
