New Alien film planned from District 9 director, Neill Blomkamp
After teases last month, it appears that Fox is going ahead with his take on the sci-fi classic
Prometheus aside, the classic Alien film franchise hasn’t produced a great entry in nearly three decades – but there’s finally some real hope on the horizon: another film is coming, and from a proven, notable director to boot.
Neill Blomkamp, the director of the excellent alien flick District 9, as well as Elysium and the soon-to-be-released Chappie, posted new concept art of the iconic alien creature to his Instagram account, writing, “Um… So I think it’s officially my next film. #alien”
Backing that up, Variety reports that studio 20th Century Fox has closed a deal with the director for the film, which will be separate from the planned Prometheus sequel being made with Ridley Scott. Variety says that Scott will produce the new Alien film as well, and that it will be set years after Prometheus 2.
However, it’s not the first time we’ve heard of this. Early last month, Blomkamp posted additional concept art (some shown above) from an Alien project, although the indication then was that the director wasn’t officially working on anything, and that it might have been part of a pitch that didn’t land.
We wouldn’t be surprised if the very positive reaction to the artwork got the gears moving at Fox, however – it sounds similar to how the leaked Deadpool test footage helped get that movie into production last year. It’s unknown if series lead Sigourney Weaver will reprise her role as Ripley (her image appeared in the concept art), but this already seems like a great sign for long-suffering fans.
