When it released last summer, the OnePlus 2 (shown) was dubbed the “2016 flagship killer” – but put it up to the LG G5 and Samsung Galaxy S7 and the spec differences are pretty noticeable. In any case, OnePlus is nearly ready with something new.
In an exclusive interview with CNET yesterday, OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei said that the company will launch the OnePlus 3 “at the end of the second quarter” this year, which puts a debut sometime before the end of June. Last year’s flagship was launched in late July, so the timeline seems a little bit quicker this time around.
We liked the OnePlus 2 quite a bit, and CNET says it outsold the original OnePlus One – but Pei says the sequel didn’t have quite the wow factor of the original with many fans. The OnePlus 3 will feature a brand new design, then, and according to the report, Pei “hopes the OnePlus 3 will have ‘at least’ that special feeling cast by the OnePlus One when users first saw it.”
The article also says that OnePlus plans to revise its tactics this time around, utilizing more "traditional marketing" techniques and offering a "better buying process" – hopefully without the much-maligned invitation system seen on the two prior core models and the OnePlus X. OnePlus will also take credit cards for purchases, and plans to put a bigger focus on the U.S. market in 2016.
The OnePlus 2 is holding tight onto our #6 slot on the list of the top 10 smartphones in the world, even after several months of release, while the smaller, cheaper OnePlus X isn’t far behind at #8. Both are affordable alternatives to top-tier flagships, but to borrow a phrase from the company itself, it sounds like OnePlus isn’t settling with what it already has. Good to hear.
