Return to the Wasteland with Fallout 4’s first DLC drops (UPDATE: Automatron trailer boots up)

First three content packs focus on base building and Nick Valentine's detective agency

Fallout 4‘s mutated and radiated Commonwealth is huge, but if you’ve explored every inch already Bethesda’s got some good news – the first DLC drops will start landing in March.

The first three packs have been officially revealed, letting wasteland wanderers know what to expect and how many bottlecaps (ie cold hard cash) they’ll have to part with to grab each one.

The first, Automatron, arrives in March for £7.99. It sounds like it will add unique radiant quests that let you track robots across the wasteland and collect their parts in order to construct your own robo-buddies. Official description below:

The mysterious Mechanist has unleashed a horde of evil robots into the Commonwealth, including the devious Robobrain. Hunt them down and harvest their parts to build and mod your own custom robot companions. Choose from hundreds of mods; mixing limbs, armor, abilities, and weapons like the all-new lightning chain gun. Even customise their paint schemes and choose their voices!

UPDATE: The Automatron trailer arrived this week, confirming the release date and teasing some of the robotic monstrosities you’ll be taking on.

So far, we’ve spotted lightning coils, robot crafting and plenty of combat. You’ll be able to choose voices and paint jobs for your creations, and hopefully there’ll be some new weapons and outfits to keep us exploring the Wasteland too.

It lands on the 22nd of March.

The second, smaller DLC pack will be Wasteland Workshop. It arrives in April for a pocket change £3.99. It’s mostly focused on base building, but we like the sound of tracking and capturing Deathclaws then pitting them against some hapless raiders.

With the Wasteland Workshop, design and set cages to capture live creatures – from raiders to Deathclaws! Tame them or have them face off in battle, even against your fellow settlers. The Wasteland Workshop also includes a suite of new design options for your settlements like nixi tube lighting, letter kits, taxidermy and more!

The biggest content drop will turn up in May. Far Harbour will cost a substantial £19.99, but justifies the extra cost with plenty of story missions tied around everyone’s favourite synth, Nick Valentine. (SPOILERS. Sorry.)

A new case from Valentine’s Detective Agency leads you on a search for a young woman and a secret colony of synths. Travel off the coast of Maine to the mysterious island of Far Harbor, where higher levels of radiation have created a more feral world. Navigate through the growing conflict between the synths, the Children of Atom, and the local townspeople.

Far Harbor features the largest landmass for an add-on that we’ve ever created, filled with new faction quests, settlements, lethal creatures and dungeons. Become more powerful with new, higher-level armor and weapons.

These packs are on top of the improved Survival mode, and should just be the start, too. Bethesda wants to keep the content coming throughout 2016, but the price of the season pass will be going up to keep the lights on at the dev studio.

It cost £24.99 at launch, but from the 1st of March the season pass will cost £39.99.

Pick up the season pass at launch? No worries – you won’t have to pay any extra, and you’ll get all the content. You’ve got until the 1st of March to grab it for the original £24.99 price, too, so if you move quick you won’t have to pay any extra.

If Bethesda makes good on its promise of a year of content, that’s looking like stonkingly good value.

You can sign up for the DLC beta program right now, in case you want early access and can help Bethesda squash down any bugs that might turn up before launch.
