Say hello to Sony Interactive Entertainment, the new name behind PlayStation
Sorry to SCEE you go
As if there was any doubt PlayStation was one of Sony’s biggest assets, the company just revealed its plan for the next 20 years – Sony Interactive Entertainment.
The new mega-company merges the two parts of Sony that deal with all things PlayStation. Sony Computer Entertainment used to handle hardware and games, while Sony Network Entertainment dealt with the PlayStation Network.
That all changed today, when SCEE president Jim Ryan confirmed the change on the PlayStation Blog.
Sony Interactive Entertainment will be based in San Mateo, California, and represent the entire PlayStation division. Andrew House, SCEI’s current president and CEO, will remain the man in charge.
A name change might not sound like a big deal, but having all parts of the company in one place should make it easier to team up on new hardware like PlayStation VR, and share tech smarts between the network team and any Sony World Wide Studios devs working on multiplayer games.
It might be the right move to grow the PS4 and PlayStation VR, but the name change is a bit poignant for PS1 fans; the SCE logo was the first thing to fade onscreen whenever you booted up an original PlayStation.
Sony’s European arm, SCEE, will continue to operate in London, but will be rebranded as Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe.
There’s no clue if the new name will mean the European and American teams will start working more closely together on game launch dates and PSN discounts though.
The rebranding will go into effect on the 1st of April this year.
