Screen lickin’ good: germ-killing smartphone Gorilla Glass is finally here

Your next smartphone is likely to be a lot less gross

You’ve probably never heard of the ZTE Axon. It’s a new smartphone from the Chinese tech giant, and its most notable feature is its screen.

Not because it’s smashed world records with an insane 8K resolution (because it hasn’t), but because it’s the first handset in the world to land with Corning’s antimicrobial Gorilla Glass.

Any smartphone worth its weight in silicon comes slathered in Gorilla Glass these days, thanks to its impressive scratch resistance.

The new antimicrobial offering comines this toughness with the ability to kill 99.9% of on-screen bacteria, which can surely only be a good thing.

The glass is infused with silver ions, which are able to kill off any bacteria that come into contact with them, and we expect more and more handsets to adopt the new screens in the near future.

Corning has released a rather gross-looking video to simulate the display in action, so try not to dwell on the squirming mass of germs that are writhing around on your non-antimicrobial screen at this very moment.
