So long! OnePlus 2’s invite system permanently abolished
As of Saturday, you can simply buy the smartphone outright from OnePlus
The OnePlus 2 is a sharp device: a near-flagship phone at a much lower price, and currently sitting at #6 on our top smartphone listing. But actually getting your hands on one can be a pain, due to the company’s invite system.
That same invite system was used to sell the original OnePlus One for a long stretch, and they claimed it was needed to help the small company manage production demands. But given its growing profile, that move hardly seemed as necessary for the sequel. And now, thankfully, it’s not.
Starting this Saturday, 5 December, the £240 OnePlus 2 will no longer require an invite to purchase directly from the company. And that’s an ongoing offer: co-founder Carl Pei writes on the company forums that it’s a permanent move: “You’ll never again need an invite to purchase the OnePlus 2. We’re proud to be able to make the OnePlus 2 invite-free so soon and hope this will make getting your very own OnePlus 2 a cheerfully easy experience.”
And what about the OnePlus X, the company’s also-excellent new phone – which is smaller and cheaper than the OnePlus 2 – will keep its ongoing invite system, but will have a special open purchase promotion this weekend. From 5-7 December, you’ll be able to purchase the £199 device without an invite. Here’s hoping the X will be the last OnePlus phone to need the system.
In any case, if you’ve been itching to grab the OnePlus 2, you’ve got a couple of days to pull together your funds to buy one directly from the company. Or, if you’d prefer, OppoMart is selling it outright for just £200 right now for some reason – and that’s a pretty appealing option.
