They don’t exactly evoke images of the blazing sun, but Sony has just launched its equivalent of a July pool party – a new summer range of VAIOs.

Before you start packing your suitcase for Dixons, we should warn you that all three are updates rather than brand new models, although there are some tasty new features that a sunburnt man might enjoy in the shade.

The FJ3 Series (top left) has been given an all round power-up, with faster memory, a new 100GB hard disk and a new Super Multi Dual Layer drive.

Pre-loaded Skype 2.0 software will help spoil you with cheap calls and, if you do brave the sun, the 14.1in X-Black LCD will reduce glare.

The more advanced FE-20 Series (middle) also sports a sun-friendly 15.1in screen, but ups the resolution to WXGA, and stirs Wi-Fi, top graphics processing from an NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 chip and Intel Core Duo processors into the mix.

Having lost its battle with a steamroller, the carbon fibre SZ2 Series (top right) now sports one of the thinnest screens ever, at just 4.5mm thick. Luckily, its features haven’t been squeezed out the sides in the process – there’s Intel Core Duo processing, a standard 1GB RAM and fingerprint scanning security for paranoid businessmen.

You can also switch from the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 processor to a slower Intel job to get battery up to an impressive six hours.

Pricing’s as follows: the FJ3 series starts at £850, the FE20s from £1100 and the posh SZ2s begin at £1200. We’re waiting to hear when they’re due in shops.
