Time out – Quantum Break just got confirmed for the PC
Bundled freebies don’t show a lot of confidence in Remedy’s sci-fi shooter though
Save the date, Xbox One fans; Remedy’s time-twisting shooter Quantum Break lands on the 5th of April – and it’s heading to the PC as well.
You’re going to need one hell of a PC to play it though. Quantum Break looks set to be the first game to go DirectX 12-only, with a leaked spec sheet saying you’d need a GTX 980ti or Radeon R9 Fury, and a whopping 16GB of RAM, to get the best frame rates.
The PC announcement was a bit of a surprise, as Quantum Break was originally pitched as an Xbox One exclusive. Xbox One launch titles like Killer Instinct, Dead Rising 3 and Rome eventually turned up on PC, but this looks like the first to get a simultaneous launch.
Microsoft’s made choosing which version to pick up pretty easy; digitally pre-order the Xbox One edition and you’ll get the PC version completely free.
The Xbox version will also come bundled with a backwards-compatible Xbox 360 copy of Remedy’s spooky action adventure Alan Wake, complete with DLC. Pre-order and you’ll get the American Nightmare expandalone thrown in too.
Quantum Break is one of the last remnants of Microsoft’s original plan for the Xbox One; a genre-spanning title with a scripted TV series that influences the game as you watch. X-Men‘s Ice Man, Shawn Ashmore, has a starring role, but the gameplay is a time-twisting take on the all-guns-blazing action Remedy nailed with Max Payne.
It’ll be interesting to see if giving away PC copies of multiform games will be something Microsoft starts doing on a regular basis, or if it’s a one-off for Quantum Break. There are plenty of Xbox exclusives in the pipeline, including Scalebound and Gears of War 4, but they haven’t been confirmed for a PC release.
The bundled freebies might be welcomed by fans, but it also suggests that Microsoft doesn’t have a lot of confidence in the new IP. Early previews have been positive, but we’ll have to wait until the 5th of April to see if the game is a success.
