Xbox One June update will bring external storage support, real names and more
Microsoft outlines what’s coming in the console’s next big software update
Microsoft has revealed what’s in store for Xbox One users when next month’s big update rolls around – and it includes support for external storage devices.
If you’re close to running out of hard drive space for games and apps, it’s time to get happy, because the June update will allow up to two external hard drives to be attached to each console at once.
Each drive must by 256GB or larger in capacity and USB 3.0 compatible, and will need to be formatted for Xbox One use before it works. But once up and running, it can be used for storing pretty much anything, including DLC.
Another addition is support for real names in your Xbox Live friends list – something that’ll prove incredibly useful for users with a lot of online mates. Now you won’t have to rely on Gamertags to identify a person.
SmartGlass is also improving, with the smartphone and tablet app now getting the full Universal Remote Control and OneGuide EPG experience. The former lets you switch channels and control recorded content on the Xbox One’s DVR, while OneGuide will be finally available to all UK users.
