Your next smartphone could have a whopping 6GB of RAM

Are those four 12Gb LPDDR4 DRAM modules in your pocket, or are you just pleased to see me?

If you’re rocking 4GB of RAM in your smartphone, you know you’ve made it in life.

You probably get served first at the bar, vending machines spit out two of everything, and crazy drunks on the night bus politely lower their voices in your presence.

That could all go out the window however, thanks to Samsung, who has announced mass-production of its sexily-named 12Gb LPDDR4 DRAM modules.

To clarify, those are Gigabits, 12 of which translate to 1.5GB of RAM. Stack four of those bad boys together, and boom – welcome to 6GB of RAM country.

The higher density of these newer modules means that you can cram more RAM into the same amount of space – current smartphones with 3GB of RAM could therefore squeeze in 6GB, while handsets with 2GB of RAM could bump that up to 3GB.

Naturally the newer RAM is 30% faster and 20% more efficient, so all in all, it’s good news for everyone.

It’s unclear when we’ll be seeing the new RAM modules pop up in devices, but it shouldn’t be too long before you’re smartphone’s rocking more memory than your ageing laptop.
